2022 - HS2 (Translocation).

Project Details.


Project details have been deliberately omitted as I doubt that there is anyone who hasn't heard of HS2.


Working alongside HS2 Limited and an approved tier 1 ecological consultancy.


The project was predominantly aimed at trapping and translocating a small GCN population. Any additional captured reptiles and amphibians were also translocated.  


Site Details.


The working area was located near Aylesbury.


The site covered approximately 21 hectares and was divided in to smaller sub-sections by means of implementing reptile fencing. Approximately 950 pitfall traps were installed along with a similar number of refugia mats.


Each trap and mat was checked twice per day by team of suitably qualified ecologists supported by a number of seasonal and temporary workers.



Responsibilities and work undertaken.


Acting as a Lead Ecologist and ECoW.


Undertake pre-works checks for protected / notable species.

Preparation of the site (e.g. installation of reptile and newt fencing).


Supervise and lead a team of 6 ecological workers including on-going training and mentoring.

Safe capture and translocation of protected species to suitable receptor sites.


Daily reporting to Project Managers and Environmental Managers.

Resolve ecological issues while on site with pragmatic solutions.

Supervise and undertake the implementation of mitigation measures and/or method statements.
